Welcome to Terrapin Springs Farm

Terrapin Springs Farm

Terrapin Springs Farm in Halifax County, Virginia is the country home of Joanne and Don Marx. Our friends call it a “magical” place where fantasy and reality merge with natural beauty. The farm lies on 75 acres of forest and pasture with several small creeks, and the namesake Terrapin Springs. The small house where we live still retains many of the artifacts of Joanne’s youth. Joanne and Don have renovated the farm’s outbuildings and added three new barns, workshops and a lodge, and 6800ft of sparkling white wood fence. Don has also built more than four miles of trails and eleven bridges through the forest lands.

The Old Farm House, circa 1860

Joanne’s grandparent’s original 1860’s farmhouse is being restored and may be our final home. It has six fireplaces and parts of the original gas lighting. Best of it all, it sits on the top of a hill with a panoramic view of amazing sunsets to the west.

Terrapin Springs Farm, in the heart of Aarons Creek and anchored by the Aarons Creek Baptist Church, is literally in the middle of no where. Ten miles away from three towns, Virgilina (pop 146), Clarksville (pop 1242) and South Boston (pop 6915), Aarons Creek is a very small farming community where time moves slowly and there is only one paved road. Everyone knows everyone or is related, and nearly everyone waves hello as they pass along Aarons Creek Road.

The farm was originally a portion of Joanne’s grandfather’s homestead which was divided among his children where Joanne’s father and mother, Cabble and Ola Nunn raised their daughter Joanne and her brother CW. In the heart of tobacco farming country, Cabble and neighbors constructed the home in 1949 from local lumber milled from Joanne’s grandfather’s lumber mill. The farmhouse is much the same as the year it was built.

Terrapin Springs Farm is a paradise for anyone seeking tranquility and peace, and so Joanne and Don are drawn here to recharge their spirits. Increasingly, it has become their nearly full-time home.

In 2021-22, Joanne and Don planted a large COVID-19 victory garden to supply the Aarons Creek Community with free produce for the summer. We harvested thousands of fresh tomatoes (over 3 tons) for donation to our community, and we have collected hundreds of donations for the Midway Volunteer Fire Department.
